1
Washington Capitals Tex Last month:

1

Change: -
What happens when a team in the Southeast division wins eight of ten games?  They get to sit atop the power rankings, that's what.  Kari Lehtonen and the Washington defense have been absolutely filthy thus far.  Hmm, that sounds familiar.  Maybe that's because the only thing that's changed in the US capital is Ray Emery has finally seen some playing time.
2
Florida Panthers henne Last month:

11

Change:

+9

Outraged at not being in the top 10 of last month's rankings, the Panthers have stormed their way into the second spot.  This team simply has no weaknesses.  The best powerplay in the league, a top 5 penalty kill, the 2nd best offense and defence.  As always, the Panthers are a force to be reckoned with in HWL.
3
Anaheim Ducks alexstream Last month:

3

Change: -
As always, the Ducks are simply playing good hockey.  A strong offense, an incredible defense, and great penalty killing keep the Ducks in the hunt for the President's Trophy.  This team would likely run away with the trophy if they could kick start a rather average powerplay.
4
Montreal Canadiens Colin Last month:

4

Change: -
After a major losing streak and a major winning streak since last month, the Canadiens end up exactly where they were the last time.  Many fans in Montreal believe the teams inconsistent play has a lot to do with poor special teams play, something the Habs will have to fix if they want to make any noise come playoff time.
5
Edmonton Oilers JLP Last month:

2

Change:

-3

The Oilers may deserve to be higher, but of the top 5 teams in the power rankings, the Oilers are here simply because they are only playing above average hockey at the moment.  The Oilers have all but locked up a weak division, so this team just needs to try to avoid any injuries that might hamper a playoff run.
6
Chicago Blackhawks Mils Last month:

5

Change:

-1

Despite Calgary-GM-like activity, Mils has been able to ride solid lines.  The Hawks remain the frontrunners in the Central division, thanks to a couple games-in-hand on true leading Columbus.  After getting rid of Sundin back in his Toronto days, Mats has done his best to prove to his GM that he was wrong to trade him in the first place.
7
Carolina Hurricanes revvvrob Last month:

21

Change:

+14

The defending Stanley Cup winners make a big jump in rankings.  Sidney Crosby has picked up the pace and is back over a point-per-game pace.  The Panthers and Capitals had better watch out, because we all know how dangerous this team is when Sidney is playing at his best.
8
Phoenix Coyotes dlbalr Last month:

25

Change:

+17

The Coyotes make a giant leap in the power ranks, the biggest improvement on record.  Scoring is back up for the Coyotes, a team we all knew wouldn't stay low in the rankings for very long.  After trading for Jan Lasak, the Coyotes finally got a win from someone other than Martin Brodeur.
9
Columbus Blue Jackets Fanpuck33 Last month:

7

Change:

-2

The Jackets have rebounded from going winless in 8 games by winning 5 in a row.  Just as it looked like they were doomed to dip as far as Nashville, the Jackets pulled things together.  The powerplay has been inconsistent and Columbus fans of all ages are wondering what is going on with the usually consistent David Vyborny.
10
Ottawa Senators David B Last month:

16

Change:

+6

After a mediocre start to the season, David's Senators are back in HWL's top 10.  They briefly took over the division lead from the Habs, but have stumbled a bit as the Habs have gone on a hot streak.  The only difference between this team and the Jackets is the fact that Columbus waits until OT to lose more often than Ottawa does.  The Calder Trophy might as well be handed to Peter Mueller right now.
11
New Jersey Devils TheHabby2919 Last month:

13

Change:

+2

The biggest question fans around the league have is, "Who is Petr Vrana?"  A relative unknown, Vrana has come out of nowhere to match Alex Ovechkin every step of the way as the two lead the way for the Art Ross Trophy.  Great special teams have the Devils on top of the Atlantic division, with only one true challenger.
12
San Jose Sharks kerplunk Last month:

14

Change:

+2

Just as this team got star center Patrick Marleau back from injury, the Columbus Blue Jackets struck once again, this time knocking out Lukas Kaspar with a significant abdomen injury.  Still, the Sharks are playing good hockey and seem to be a playoff lock.  With three games-in-hand, the Sharks still have a chance to get back into the hunt for the Pacific division title.
13
Philadelphia Flyers BTH Last month:

8

Change:

-5

BTH continues to get a quality season out of his Flyers.  Despite a drop in the power rankings, the Flyers appear to be the only challenger to the Devils for the Atlantic division lead.  The Flyers are still in a tough spot, though, as BTH has some decisions to make with as many as three players looking toward the links after the season ends.
14
Nashville Predators Tony Last month:

6

Change:

-8

The last time we checked in on the Thrashers, they looked primed to challenge for the difficult Central crown.  Things are looking up in the music city lately, as they have rebounded from a 9 game winless streak by picking up 7 wins in their last 10 games.  The biggest worry for this team appears to be keeping the puck out of their own net.
15
Dallas Stars koivu-11 Last month:

12

Change:

-3

The Stars are playing solid hockey, but are still dangerously close to the last playoff spot in the West.  With the league's 3rd worst powerplay, many wonder how this team is still in the playoff hunt.  If this team wants to stay in the fight, they'd better learn how to take advantage when the other team is down a man.
16
Tampa Bay Lightning CaliHabsFan Last month:

9

Change:

-7

CaliHabsFan remains the highest rank rookie GM in HWL.  Tampa Bay probably doesn't deserve this much of a drop, but the rank is fitting for a team sitting in the final playoff spot.  With solid special teams, this appears to be another team looking to improve its 5-on-5 play.
17
Detroit Red Wings gfivehole1 Last month:

17

Change: -
The Red Wings are a perfect example of a team on a hot streak taking away a higher ranking from a better team.  The Red Wings are still among the worst in the league, but they have been playing great hockey in their last ten games.  A poor powerplay and a pathetic offense in general has this team doomed to eventually drop significantly in the power rankings.
18
Atlanta Thrashers sakiqc Last month:

27

Change:

+9

The Atlanta Thrashers are thrilled to have Pavel Bure back in the lineup after a lengthy injury.  The good news is that the Thrashers sit only 4 points from a playoff spot.  The bad news is that they've played more games than everyone else in the conference.  The surprisingly strong play of JP Levasseur has this team contemplating moving the Bulin Wall out of the South.
19
Calgary Flames Trizzak Last month:

19

Change: -
The Calgary Flames are still playing decent hockey under their new new GM.  Lacking a breakaway offensive player, this team wins with hard work and great goaltending.  Well, at least when newly acquired Phil Sauve isn't between the pipes.  Stopping goals might be even easier for the Kipper if star defender Dion Phaneuf could stay out of the box.
20
Buffalo Sabres Sabres_GM Last month:

24

Change:

+4

Trading Dany Heatley hasn't slowed down the Sabres one bit.  The once lowly Sabres continue to improve.  With a killer special teams unit, this team could very likely get into the playoff hunt.  Thomas Vokoun, however, seems to be tiring, having started all but two games this season.
21
New York Rangers Macaskill Last month:

22

Change:

+1

A few weeks ago the Ranger were clinging to the division lead.  Now, they trail by double digits.  How does a team fall that far in the division and move up in the power rankings?  I don't know, but it just goes to show how bad that division was playing earlier in the season.  Fans in New York are still more concerned with how the Leafs do than they are with their own team.
22
Boston Bruins Boston Rob Last month:

23

Change:

+1

Anoter year, another frustrating first half for the Boston Bruins.  Things have been so bad lately that the team's GM has threatened to gut the team and start again from scratch.  Montreal fans everywhere are thrilled to here about the possible demise of the hated Bruins.
23
Minnesota Wild Seb Last month:

29

Change:

+6

As Seb gains experience, the Wild climb gingerly in the standings.  A big reason for this team's slight turnaround has been putting Kyle Chipchura on a defensive minded line.  Playing on an offensive line, Kyle produced under half a point per game, while putting up a -15.  Back in a role that suits him, this team is playing tighter games.
24
Los Angeles Kings TBRC Last month:

20

Change:

-4

The Kings are another team who were relying on a big name goalie to provide stability to a young team.  They're also another team whose goalie has left him crying and wishing for Dan Cloutier.  A very strong PK unit has not been able to make up for a mediocre powerplay.
25
New York Islanders dark_faerie87 Last month:

28

Change:

+3

It was difficult to rank the Islanders this high, but the teams behind them have simply been worse as of late.  The race to 10 wins (or 30 losses) appears to be between the Islanders and Avalance.  It's also a race to see whether this team will reach double digit wins or ties first.
26
Colorado Avalanche jetsniper Last month:

30

Change:

+4

Before fans start celebrating in Denver, they should remember they still have the worst record in the league.  This team's powerplay is an absolute joke.  They're accused of tanking more often than they score goals.  If only this team could talk Joe Sakic into leaving the bench and lacing up his skates.
27
Pittsburgh Penguins nhfarber Last month:

15

Change: -12
What a difference a player makes.  This young team was looking strong earlier this season, but a lenghty knee injury to James Sheppard has sent the Pens into a spiral.  5-on-5 play has been the death of the Penguins, as their special teams have played fairly well all season long.
28
Toronto Maple Leafs PTG Last month:

26

Change:

-2

For a while, it looked like the Maple Leafs were going to turn a corner and make a push.  Then, things returned to normal and the Leafs are back at the bottom of the barrel.  You know line strategies are strange when Yanic Perreault is a +14 and Alexander Steen is a -15.  This team gives up far too many goals and needs to play some defensive hockey.
29
St. Louis Blues Quebecois Last month:

10

Change:

-19

No team has seen as big a dropoff as the St. Louis Blues.  Sitting in a playoff spot the last time we checked in on them, they now sit 12 points out of the race, and showing no signs of turning things around, failing to pick up a single point in their last ten games.  Marek Schwartz has not been himself lately and the Blue's have one of the worst special teams in the league.
30
Vancouver Canucks Captain_Stealth Last month:

18

Change:

-12

After stamping his name on the team by picking up Daniel Alfredsson, Vinny's team has dropped off the table.  In their last ten games, this team has picked up only a single point.  JS Giguere, acquired to provide stability in goal, has been no better than former starter Pascal LeClaire.
